As our team is growing, we are looking for a curious and enthusiastic Data Scientist intern who shares our passion for using data and analytics to drive real change. The right candidate will be independent and self-motivated and comfortable in a fast-moving organization. This position will be based in our Rotterdam office located at the Erasmus University campus, with a hybrid working style possible.

As an intern at Arboretica, you will work directly with our CEO and CTO, as well as our product and development teams on delivering scalable and impactful data products. You will be a part of a small, multidisciplinary, and agile team and get the chance to build your career with people who want to solve problems, develop their expertise, and have fun together.

This is either a part-time (15-20 hours per week) or full-time internship position (40 hours per week).

Responsibilities

  • Learn and apply Arboretica’s proprietary algorithms to different business and social problems
  • Develop application prototypes and conduct rapid testing based on user validation feedbacks
  • Assist in developing the user interface (UI) for the LLM application; Contribute to building data pipelines
  • Interpret and analyze the results of various algorithms
  • Evaluate the accuracy of various algorithms
  • Conduct routine and ad-hoc research to support algorithm and product development 

Education and Experience

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) in Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics, Statistics, Operations Research, Business Analytics, or a related quantitative field.
  • Strong programming skills in Python) and the Jupyter Notebook/Lab environment.
  • Solid understanding of Natural Language Processing (NLP) for tasks like text cleaning, tokenization, translation, and sentiment analysis.
  • Working knowledge of Large Language Models (LLMs) and their capabilities (familiarity with specific LLM frameworks is a plus).
  • Experience building web applications using a Python framework like Django or Flask.
  • Experience with data wrangling: Ability to query, clean, and manipulate complex datasets using Python for analysis.
  • Passion for data exploration: Demonstrated interest in understanding and interpreting public data for insights.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication skills: Ability to explain technical concepts and analysis results clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences. Can translate business objectives into actionable data analysis plans.
  • Technical proficiency: Experience with APIs, databases, and version control systems (e.g., Git).
  • Fast learner and adaptable: Thrives in fast-paced environments and can quickly learn new technologies.
  • Team player with independent work ethic: Collaborates effectively with others but can also manage tasks independently.
  • Fluency in English (written and oral communication).
  • Multilingual skills: Ability to speak a second language is a plus but not required.
